This major point is not having a TV set. The freeman and contracting aspects are secondary. Even if you don't inform them, they will find out if a TV set is being used for watching TV programmes.

Quite straightforward. They do the simple thing first, use eyes and ears when visiting. They can also do a background check on a TV subscription at the address. I know someone take out a Sky subscription (broadband and telephone only, no TV subscription), and that appears to have triggered a detection visit. The only logical reason for it happening was that the initial £10 down payment was logged by Sky as TV subscription, even though it was not for that.

Beyond the simple ways, they can use technology. Anyone who thinks RF leakage can't be detected should consider how detectable wireless devices are. My wireless network devices detect lots of wireless routers in other homes. I can tell whether they're BT, Sky, Orange, etc., and what encryption they're using. My wireless "detection" devices sit on the end of USB extender cables, and are smaller than a fingerprint.

This shouldn't be a concern. Accept that they can detect a TV, but have your setup configured that you can defeat them if they try further action. I think they can detect your setup, and will know if you're a sitting duck or someone that will leave them with egg on their face.

If everyone just detuned their tv and cancelled the tv licence they would soon drop the need for a tv licence if it meant more people being informed of the cultural changes they needed to keep up with. But that's not going to happen, almost everyone is addicted to tv. While its more mind altering than any drug and is so dangerous that viewers give up their free will, those who have the power will never ban it because they rely on it a great deal to keep their power.

Unless you admit to having a telly or they physically see it they cant do anything...simples. Some people might want a big plasma screen to watch dvds and run their computer through so having the tv is fine just dont admit to it

Not absolutely true, no offense intentioned. :)

I have sent TVL packing 3 times in last 12 months.
Each time I have got the tv on in background and they can see it through the window.

Having a tv is not a requirement to having a license, so when they see or hear a tv that is on does not prove anything in relation to the legislation that they are using to entrap people.

On one particular occassion, TVL came to my door, the tv was on, he could see and hear it.
However, after a few discreet words with him he left claiming to get a warrant... , of course he lied. So at that point I reopened my door and called out to him as he was leaving, I said "I told you do not lie to me."

10 or so minutes later he had been to my brothers house just a couple of miles away and unfortunately for my brother he fails to stand up for himself :? .
The long and short being, the TVL got all the required details from him and he then signed their statement. He got a £365 fine/costs...

It would require a warrant to get a warrant under british legislation... very circular conundrum ;)

Do the scary tv detector van adverts on tv and the people who revere them qualify as a religious cult? :D

hehehe i like your style, the way i am suggesting to people is the most hassle free way i think, i know some of you like face to face meetings with these guys but if you dont and you just want them to quietly go away then a short letter telling them you dont requier their services is enough, ive got 4 people licences free this way so far, no extra visits etc. But if you have a telly and you got balls open that door and let them see it hahaha i love you guys.

Oh and by the way id like to say that the only reason i had the bottle to do any of this was because of what i have learnt off this site so thanks a million guys :)
