hi paul,

you or anyone can be a part of it.

ok lets start something????????????

anyone wanting to be the FIRST community member in latvia, then i propose this:

Stay on my friends farm. These friends live in the city (Riga) and they have inherited a farm which is close to the Russian / Latvian border. The farm has a lot of land and also has enough wood collected for 3 months survival in the baltic winter. It will soon be the latvian summer so wood is not a problem, but if you intend staying there in the winter then you need to collect the wood in the warmer weather.

Ive just spoken with my friends. We agreed the following:

1. If i can find someone to start this community, then they can live on this farm for £50.00 per month.
First payment of £300.00 covers first 6 months rent.

2. There will be a possibility of converting the rental agreement into a private mortgage agreement.

3. There will be a possibility of them selling land to the community (i suggest a mixture of forest and open land)

The friends live in the city, but they would like to return to this farm 3 or 4 times a year to celebrate in latvian tradition.

Also, i will say that these friends are AWAKE. She is aware of corruption, he used to be in soviet army before latvia was seperated from russia, hes anti-government as he hates what the government has done to his country.
They are both aware of this thread on this site and they can use translation tools.... Hopefully they will post here sometime!

OK - so its possible to start this community anytime anyone wants to go out there.

hi everyone, i just wanted to add bits about latvia, because i am latvian citizen and i was looking into possibility to buy farmhouse in middle of nowhere for cheap too and was doing some researches too. the citizen of latvia only can buy land which has agrigaltural and woodland status, this is one point to look for.there should be sort of building permissions, but they not so strict as in uk thankfully. in winter time in a middle of nowhere you must have decent offroad car and even maybe plaw thingy, because otherwise you will sit in your farmhouse until spring. so it means you rather buy vehicle here and get register it there(if this way cheaper) or get vehicle there which a bit more expencive but you get car designed for latvian roads with probably cheaper insurance. insurance is affordable for cars there comparing uk.
mobile internet is good there, but in some places in middle of nowhere maight be problematic to get proper speed if any, i never been in middle of nowhere trying to get internet though..
the best option for me personally as citizen of latvia is to buy old village house with decend size of land, preferably partially would be woodland and agricultural, wth such buildings as:sauna and bits and bobs: vell for example, about 3-7 acres of land, but for cheap, but house should be ok to live in stright away without leeking roof and such.. of course you wont expect much facilities for this house price: so toilet will be on the street, at summer and winter, you should take care about sewage. water from the vell, all year round, until you not create own system..
you should make sure your vell is good and water there is not contaminaited because it was't used for years, you need to have water supply for first time. also washing yourself you should in special sauna house which you should heat up with wood, and if you keen to wash yourself everyday, you have to have a lot of wood supply, lol;) usually locals in village to visit each other sauna house friends and relatives make a rota who gonna heat up sauna to use, its simplier and cheaper). with such not technologic facilities you wont have to pay much bills actually, and in year or two you can make a candy from this old house;)
about wood: lots of wood around, but forests belongs to someone:state or person, so you should research opportunities about getting wood from there legally and be generouse to wild life and leave proper amount of fallen wood to rot to provide conditions for muchrooms and wild animals.
there is a lot of opportunities for food foraging:mushrooms and berries and wild herbs etc, but you should know which mushrooms ok to eat..
fuel in latvia is expensive and without car its hard to do things living in a middle of nowhere:if you want to make some cash and sell your vegetable produce, eggs, etc, you should calculate how profitable it will be with cost of fuel, so you need to know in advance how you gonna make money to pay for electrocity, bulding materials (to buil/repair house and buildings), collect wood(takes fuel), buy some food from shops around until your own will be grown, pay for internet and car insurances and etc. those expences are not small at all, not much less than uk, but need more creativity how to make money to pay for those expences. however you might be interested in making own biodiesel, i would say it's a dream might not come true because there is not much chip shops around and people have no much wasted oil, and those who have-they already get it before you.
about opening business: as far as i know from my friends, its a bigger headache rather than in uk, you should have about 2 thousand lats up front as asset and taxation a bit more complicated, but with right accountant you will be sorted i belive so.
about travelling:if you want to live in middle of nowhere, you probably will be about 3-5 hours driving from airport (riga), depends on location and season.
i might pop in here to check this thread later, hope i added some useful information to people who are considering this option.
in general, latvia is brilliant place to live if you have money, much better than uk, less regulation, more privacy, easier to get a deals with people.climat better too, in summer you can have proper summer, swim in lake/river until august/september and its hot and great, summer is much better than in uk and ecology is great.

hi beware! good post thanks, am glad you can also see that latvia has less regulation, more privacy etc...
you say that fuel is expensive, ill just add that public transport is cheap. when i was living in madona, it was over an hours bus ride to the nearest small town, this bus cost about 15 or 20p.

E No. If the land is too wet it has to be possible to drain it, and this will result in an investment, because you then can not grow vegetables, fruit etc on it and can not build houses!

F Ah, so you mentioned an example of land which doesn't even exist?

Also the first thing you should ask people is how much money they have, when they want to get involved in this community and if they want to do it full time.

Good luck with your plans I am out.

dude you make wet land more plant friendly by adding sand or perlite for better aeration = better nutrient uptake any land can be added to with other matter to make it arable soil. llewop is right, wet land is not a bad thing. the things grow wild of there own accord there as stated would mean it's interesting.

do not be so quick to dismiss this idea itr seems llewop has got a good mentality to this project and i am considering getting on board.

you keep on scrutinizing the subject but you do not provide an alternative, from reading your posts i can tell you have a lot to give to any project and your thinking is appreciated, however being part of a community requires everyone to take responsibility for themselves and the shared goal they agreed on so consider this before you post.
the more we argue and pick apart eachothers contributions the less we will achieve, everytime you chose to post please bring some kind of knowledge that helps the cause. Rather than asking others for assurance, research it and show everyone else yours.

there is now land and a house ready for anyone wanting to make this move to latvia. the land is in middle of nowhere, it has internet through dongle only, has elec, no running water or drains. land is mixture of dry land, wet land. there is a well but best not to use this. there are springs on the land. lots of forest areas.

anyone wanting to go there can go! id go myself but have to stay in UK for a few months, obligations here...
but if someone wanted to start this off in latvia, ill be close behind you and hopefully a few others!
