Wild food salad

Wild food salad

Postby Quercus » Thu Apr 30, 2009 3:30 pm

Thought I'd share some knowledge on whats edible out there now and free.

It is currently very easy to pick a wild food salad, still somethign I am new to but today I have gathered:

Lime tree leaves (Tilia europaea): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilia_%C3%97_europaea (really tasty leaves!)
Hawthorn leaves (Crataegus monogyna): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crataegus
Jack by the hedge/hedge-garlic leaves (Alliaria petiolata): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliaria_petiolata
Hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardamine_hirsuta

Not sure yet how it will all do together, would be good to throw in some primrose flowers etc, will be a work in progress. Thought I'd post it as its all growing and ready most probably close by! and free!!!

Dandilion greens picked early are good raw, late dandilions are best cooked limp with some salt, then sauteed in hot bacon fat and onions. If you like greens, youll like these.

Try this PDF:
http://www.wildfoodschool.co.uk/urban/wfsURBANGUIDE.pdf

And these videos:
http://vimeo.com/eatweeds

Also get involved in local forages and walks in case the day comes where we are not able to buy from T E Stockwell (AKA TESCO) or others we need to have the knowledge we once had to forage for plants and mushrooms to take back our health and wealth.

I want to start a website on this type of thing but at the moment don’t have the time... have the resources just not the time!

Iam thinking a good way forward is to live by example in these ways. IF you can. That includes generating electricity or whatever. Maybe whilst the world collapses around us we could be doing these things. We cant help it if we are amongst the first to see storms ahead and go do something else. Me not fancy relying on the ptb. For anything !

Thanks for the info and links !
